You are now sui juris, as the Lawyers say, & with it all the privilages and responsibilities of manhood. You can make contracts and be liable for breach of them. & are now competent to be Defendant in an action for Breach of Promise of Marriage should you fall a victim to feminine wiles and promise in haste & repent at leisure. But as I belive you are compos mentis, & endowed with plenty of common sense, I shall expect you to avoid all man-traps of this kind & wait until you arrive at more mature years before thinking of settling down in life. I trust you may have a successful & useful career. I am sure that this is the wish of all your friends & with the blessing of health there is no reason why this should not be so. You have a good start in life & with the example of your Father before you your aim should be to do as well as he has done, & have a private & business reputation as good as his. But this all roots with yourself and be sure this one thing, that nothing in this life worth attaining comes without working for. Now when you are young & strong is the time to work, & lay the foundation that will enable you, when you feel that age is creeping, as to take things more comfortably. Stick to work and don't be tempted at any time to play the Giddy Goat, and you may reasonably hope to have your work meet with success. I enclose a smalll cheque as a Birthday present & with best wishes of every kinds from your aunt and myself B???? ?? ??????????????? ????? Wm Self Weeks --------------------------------- Notes: sui juris - One who has all the rights to which a freemen is entitled; one who is not under the power of another, as a slave, a minor, and the like. compos mentis - of sound mind promise in haste & repent at leisure - a common saying alluding to a hasty marriage.
