1890 - October 5th Transcribed text of a newspaper article regarding the 50th Jubilee (aniversary) of employment of William Weeks (the elder) ---------------------------------------------- AN INTERESTING JUBILEE CELEBRATION AT NEWPORT, LAST NIGHT. Mr. William Weeks, managing clerk to Messrs. James Eldridge and Sons, solicitors, of Newport and Ryde, having on the 5th inst. completed his jubiiee in their office, the event was celebrated last (Friday) evening by a dinner given by the firm and held at Daylesford, the residence of Mr. Alderman Robey Frank Eldridge, J.P., C.C. In addition to the worthy guest of the evening, there were present Mr. and Mrs. Robey Eldridge, Mr. and Mrs. James Eldridge, Mrs. and Miss Weeks, Messrs. A. J. Broman, J. S. Halls, C. E. Smith Ryde office), J. B. Alderslade, and F. H. Spanner, of the clerical staft., and Messrs. Frank Weeks, George Weeks, and Henry Weeks (brothers of Mr. William Weeks), the two last- named of whom also served for some years in the office of Messrs. Eldridge. Much to the regret of all, Mr. James Eldridge, the esteemed and venerable head of the firm, was unable to be present. He is staying with his daughter in London, and during the evening a telegram was received from him congratulating Mr. Weeks on tbe happy event then being celebrated, and testifying to his faithful service during the whole of the fifty years. After dinner, at which Mr. Robey Eldridge presided, that gentleman proposed the health of Mr. Weeks, with that of Mrs. Weeks, and the proposition was supported by Mr. James Eldridge, jun., and recieved with the utmost cordiality. In com- memoration of the jubilee a presentation was made by the firm to Mr. Weeks, consisting of a handsome marble clock and ornaments, supplied by Mr. F.Weeks, the clock bearing the following inscription on a silver plate: " Presented to William Weeks, on the occasion of his jubilee in the office of James Eldridge, and of his sons, Robey Frank Eldridge and James Eldridge,jun., as a mark of their appreciation of his long and faithful discharge of his duties. 5th October, 1840 ; 5th October, 1890." Mr. Weeks also re- ceived a mahogany arm chair, very handsomely and comfortably upholstered, this being the special gift of the senior member of the firm. The chair was supplied by Mr. C. H. Wadham. Mr. Weeks, in a speech marked by deep feeling, acknowledged the kindness shown him by those whom it had been his privilege to serve for so prolonged a period, and said the recollection of that evening would never be effaced from his memory. He concluded by proposing the health of the firm, making special and touching mention of its honoured head, who had shown him nothing but kindness from the very first day that he entered his office half a century ago, The toast was heartily received, and the Chairman as heartily responded. In the course of the evening a letter was read from Mr. William Self Weeks, who was articled in the office of Messrs. Eldridge and who is now a solicitor in prosperous practice at Clitheroe, conveying warmest wishes and con- gratulations to his father, and expressing regret that professional engagements prevented him from being present on so interesting an occasion
